Senate Republicans’ Health Care Bill, Trump’s LGBTQ “agenda,” Student Debt, and More

June 23, 2017

The Roosevelt Rundown is an email series featuring the Roosevelt Institute’s top 5 stories of the week.

1. The Second Cut is the Deepest

Senate Republicans finally released their version of the American Health Care Act (aka Trumpcare) on Thursday. Among many ways to think about this devastating bill, Roosevelt Fellow Andrea Flynn shares how the bill could restrict abortion access in Rewire and make birth control more expensive in Elite Daily.

2. Profiting Off of Pain

Visiting Fellow Rohit Chopra talks to NPR about how federal officials have been using private law firms to chase students in debt and how the debt collection industry is profiting from the student loan market.

3. Bottom Lines

Roosevelt Fellow Dorian Warren joins Capital & Main’s new podcast, “The Bottom Line” to discuss why employers, who stand to lose with Trump’s immigration policy — especially in construction and agriculture — aren’t speaking out louder against the administration’s hard line. Listen to Dorian at 54:48 in the first episode.

4. Leaving Home Without It

We live in an increasingly post-cash world, but cashless comes at a cost. Program Manager Eric Harris Bernstein writes why we should care about an aggressive, coordinated action by state AGs to appeal a court decision on American Express’s ability to force merchants to push the use of Amex over other credit cards, thus reinvigorating a debate on antitrust rules.

5. Proudly Resisting

Program Associate Marybeth Seitz-Brown joins Slate and goes toe to toe with a Trump advisor on LGBTQ issues to discuss what Trump has done for the LGBTQ community since he’s been elected. Short answer: Nothing, especially when it comes to economic issues. Watch here.

What We’re Reading:

From the systemic abuse of vulnerable workers to poor financial regulations and predatory lending, USA Today exposes the egregious and almost decade-long exploitation of short-haul truck drivers, many of whom are immigrants, in southern California.
