Tax Plans, the First 100 Days, Ideas for Education, and More
April 28, 2017
The Roosevelt Rundown is an email series featuring the Roosevelt Institute’s top 5 stories of the week.
1. The Trump Tax “Plan”
In a statement picked up by Business Insider, Forbes, and In These Times, Roosevelt Fellow and Senior Economist Marshall Steinbaum argues there’s no basis for believing that cutting corporate taxes will boost economic growth. On our blog, Program Manager Eric Harris Bernstein explains why Trump’s tax cuts would end the income tax as we know it.
2. A Hundred Days of Failure
As President Trump wraps up a lackluster first 100 days in office, Roosevelt Senior Fellow David Woolner contrasts his record with FDR’s accomplishments, and notes that the blame for today’s failure to govern effectively lies as much with Congress as it does with the White House.
3. 10 Ideas for Education
The Roosevelt network continues its rollout of this year’s top student-generated policy ideas from across the nation with a selection of proposals for education policy, including support for homeless college students, a cap on athletics subsidies, integrating special and general education, and more.
4. Bridging the Divide
Roosevelt National Network Director Joelle Gamble moderated a discussion between Marshall Steinbaum and Brookings Fellow Vanessa Williamson, author of Read My Lips: Why Americans Are Proud to Pay Taxes. They talked about Vanessa’s surprising findings and how to move the tax debate beyond demands for more cuts.
5. The Missing Element in the Jobs Debate
Roosevelt Senior Economist Lenore Palladino writes that while President Trump’s remarks on job creation have focused on the revival of American manufacturing, we should really be investing in improving the service-sector jobs of tomorrow.
